With Bear, augmented reality gives paper a boost

Bear connects printed documents to the digital world with its augmented reality platform.

Assisted by Montpellier BIC and having earned French Tech Pass certification, the fast-growing startup targets international markets and is preparing a round of fund-raising. 

Every book, magazine, product packaging, and point-of-sale piece can benefit from augmented reality and connect with video content, 3D objects, web sites, and more. Companies can now tell their stories through scenarios composed using our BEAR GO web platform tools and our mobile application,” explains Pierre Addoum, co-founder of Bear. Incubated by Montpellier BIC, the startup was created in September 2014 by Pierre Addoum and Guillaume Pineau-Valencienne.

With its offices first established at the Cap Omega BIC facility, Bear moved to the French Tech building in 2017. The company employs 14 people in Montpellier, and four more at the Station F incubator in Paris.

Bear’s augmented reality has made its way into the publishing sector for school books, albums in the T’choupi series by Nathan, and even the Annotated French Labor Code by Revue Fiduciare (where scanning an article gives readers access to updated content). Likewise, retail distributors such as Boulanger, Décathlon, Darty, Cultura, JouéClub, and But have included AR in their fliers and catalogs. “Augmented reality really boosts sales,” adds Pierre Addoum. Bear is also seeking to work with local government authorities, and recently “augmented” the summer issue of the Baillargues city magazine.

A new office in Montreal

The young company, which has doubled its sales revenue each year for the past three years, was awarded the French Tech Pass label in April 2018.

In August, Bear opened an office in Montreal “to start getting a feel for North American publishers. We are currently pursuing our third round of fund-raising. We will create a common structure with other French companies involved with augmented reality, which will enable us to become the leader in the French market. Our technical teams will remain in Montpellier.”

French Tech Pass certifications have been awarded to 38 companies within the Montpellier Métropole area, making this the second-leading area in France, just after Paris.
