A company for occupational inclusion in priority neighborhoods

Founded in Montpellier in 2017, “La Métropolitaine de Services” has a mission to develop jobs in priority neighborhoods. The occupational inclusion company hires 80% of its staff from underprivileged areas and gets them involved with its organization.

“Our goal is to create jobs in priority neighborhoods where the unemployment rate may exceed 40%, with a poverty rate that is three times higher than the average in other neighborhoods in a metropolitan area that is globally very dynamic and a source of job creation,” explains Emmanuel Kasperski, Deputy General Manager, La Métropolitaine de Services.

Founded in September 2017 in Montpellier, the occupational inclusion company focuses on three main activities: construction (covering all trades), landscaping, and cleaning of public and private spaces. Another of its goals is to get the local population in those neighborhoods involved with the company. La Métropolitaine de Services was established as a “cooperative company of public interest” (SCIC) with a group of residents and employees holding 30% of voting rights during general assembly meetings.

Over 50 people employed in 2018

This initiative was launched by the Céphée social interest group, led by Jamal Benghabrit. The group includes Pil'emploi, a temporary job agency for occupational inclusion; and Coraline, a training and support organization that promotes social and occupational inclusion for people in difficulty. These two establishments comprise the main body of La Métropolitaine de Services, whose first clients include Hérault Habitat, ACM (Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole’s public housing office), Foncia, Eiffage, and more.

La Métropolitaine de Services has already shown positive results: revenue reaching 750,000 euros for the first year, with over 50 people employed, 80% of whom are residents of priority neighborhoods. Work projects engaged in late 2018 include the renovation of five pumping stations with a group of graffiti artists from the La Mosson area on behalf of Véolia and Montpellier Métropole.
